Collaborative initiatives for equitable health access in Queensland

We work closely with Queensland Health, community organisations, and other health agencies in ensuring our diverse communities can access accurate health information and urgent health assistance when needed.

Our work with the Refugee Health Network through the state-funded CALD COVID Health Engagement Project (CCHEPP) helped device a culturally informed response strategy during the COVID-19 public health crisis. We continue to advocate equitable access to health benefits for refugees and migrants across Queensland.

The RHOP team regularly engage with community leaders to understand community needs and communicate up-to-date health advice. This included coordinating flu and COVID vaccinations at select Welcome Hubs and Neighbourhood Community Centres.

In the Toowoomba region we receive funding through the Darling Downs and West Moreton Primary Health Network (DDWMPHN) to fund a Refugee Health Officer. The primary purpose of this role is to provide health support, capacity building, access, and referral to critical and urgent health care. The role additionally, supports newly arrived refugees to improve health literacy
and understanding of the health systems in Australia.

“Multicultural Australia did a lot of work in providing a platform for communities to inform the government of what is needed to keep them healthy and safe.”

Faysel Ahmed Salet. President of Somali QLD

We who have come from many places acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land which always was and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island land. We pay our respects to their Elders throughout all time. We walk together in solidarity of the pain of the past and the shared hope for the future.
